Come Attend a Neighborhood Meeting for Salter Grove!

Salter Memorial Grove at a meeting on Thursday, April 13 from 7:00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. at the Pilgrim Senior Center. Don’t miss this opportunity to give your feedback on the following:

• Playground use and equipment upgrade
• Safe access to the breakwater
• Parking lot placement plans
• Any other concerns or ideas you have about the park

Soft drinks, coffee, and snacks will be provided. We look forward to seeing you there!

Thanks for Helping Clean Up the Grove!

Sunday brought another successful and productive cleanup at Salter Grove! Although it drizzled a little it didn’t stop all the awesome volunteers who showed up from collecting over 500 pounds (506, to be exact) of trash from park grounds, including the parking area, causeway, breakwater, and along Narragansett Parkway. Thanks to Deb from Save The Bay for hosting the event!

New Footbridge for Salter Grove Causeway

The footbridge on the causeway at Salter Grove was washed away in 2012 and crossings now pose a potential safety hazard.

Access to and from the Salter Grove breakwater, which is very popular with fishermen and picnicking families, should become safer. A new footbridge is planned to replace that washed away by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Spring Cleanup at Salter Grove: March 26

Save the date! There will be a Shoreline Cleanup at Salter Grove organized by Save The Bay on Sunday, March 26 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Come on down and help clean up litter around the Salter Grove shoreline and other park areas in preparation for spring and summer outdoor activities. Trash bags and disposable gloves will be available, but you are encouraged to bring your own work or garden gloves if you have them.

We look forward to your participation—many hands make quick work!

Shoreline Cleanup April 23-9

Note: All volunteers must be able to do some light to moderate bending and lifting. Volunteers under 16 must participate with an adult and must have their own transportation to and from the event. All volunteers are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottle and snacks.

Neighbors and Communities United!

Several FoSG members met recently for a few hours on Saturday,
November 19th, with a group of residents from the Bishop Playground area
to explore mutual interests. We wanted to jointly brief Councilman-elect
(City of Warwick) Richard Corley who was interested in the work needed to
restore and enhance our respective neighborhood parks. Also on hand
was State Representative Joe McNamara who has been a staunch
supporter of developing Salter Grove as a family-friendly destination.

Our First Grant Funding! A Seed To Grow On

The New England Grassroots Environmental Fund has recognized the work of Friends of Salter Grove and awarded our group a $992 Seed grant, our first source of funding.

“These grants are intended to support community groups who represent the most exciting energy in the environmental movement, and that are not being reached by traditional funders,” said Peter Becker, coordinator of FoSG.

The Fund officials cited “clear objectives and skilled volunteers to ensure their realization” as winning elements in FoSG’s application.
