First Formal Cleanup in 2020

Community volunteers organized by Save The Bay and informal volunteers committed to keeping Salter Grove clean joined forces on September 1st.

Two more cleanups are scheduled for 2020: Saturday, October 3 from 3 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, November 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. Please sign up here and come enjoy the wonderful views while helping! No walk-ins please—due to Covid regulations, only signed up volunteers will be accepted.

The continuing popularity of Salter Grove as a fishing site was evident in the large amount of food and beverage containers found inconsiderately deposited in the breakwater’s rocks.

Cleaning the breakwater and shoreline areas requires more time because of the difficulty of extracting hidden items and the distance involved in carrying bags back to the collection point in the parking lot.

Many informal volunteers, including members of FoSG, have been making individual efforts to collect trash during 2020. Their dedication, along with the work of the City of Warwick’s trash collectors, has kept the area around the parking lot reasonably tidy during the summer.

Numbers make a difference. During 2019, Save the Bay cleanups started in April and continued in varying intervals of 2-3 weeks through November. Group sizes ranged from approximately 10 to as many as 50.

This year, the public health requirements of the COVID-19 pandemic have prevented large gatherings, and created new protocols around collecting discarded waste. Cleanups are capped at 15 participants.
